Murray Falls

Lovely swim at Murray Falls Stopped in at Murray Falls on our drive down from Mission beach to Townsville.
We were pleasantly surprised with a great area for cool off swim. The kids had a great time and said it was their favorite place they had stopped at.

Beautiful spot, great campground The falls are easy to get to via a boardwalk, there are viewing platforms at the base and the top. It is fenced to stop stupid people trying to swim in the swiftly moving water, there is a nice looking swimming hole near the beginning of the day use area. The camp ground is nice and flat and well maintained, we didn’t camp but would have easily had we known about the spot sooner. The toilets were clean and relatively new. There as a shower but it looked like only cold water, which would be fine in the warmer weather. There is three kilometres of gravel road in, it was a bit corrugated but a farmers track on the side helped by pass the worst of the corrugates.

Fantastic walk through amazing scenery This walk was amazing!
It took 2 hours at a relaxed pace and we walked through rainforest, pristine beaches, and mangroves.
We didn't see any crocodiles or cassowaries but did see lots of lizards, birds, and butterflies.
You will need to wear trainers as the rainforest part of the walk is too wet for flipflops (thongs) and make sure you take a hat and plenty of water, also make sure to read the signs - although we didn't see the crocodiles there are there so be very careful, do not leave the path.

There is a small car park at the start of the walk with a public toilet.

Absolutely Beautiful… It was our 1st visit to Murray Falls, so we weren’t sure what to expect! Well our jaws pretty much dropped to the ground walking along the walkway to these magnificent falls .. What a beautiful spot . Has to be one of my all time fav waterfalls travelling up the highway towards north Qld . So glad we called in to visit this magnificent falls 10/10

Easy short walk for the massive waterfall that might provide a light water spray. Lovely! Fully fenced massive waterfall experience that is a short stroll to view free flowing water, hear the waterfall, possibly catch some water-spray and have an easy access photo opportunity.

Suitable for most ages. Not far Off the Bruce Highway, Look out for the Sign Murray Falls.

A MUST DO! TOTALLY WORTH THE VISIT Murray Falls was not on my itinerary but after I saw the sign I did a quick google and decided I could fit it in. Man was I pleased I did.
Absolutely beautiful and unfortunately photos don't do it justice.

I was smiling from ear to ear the whole time I was there. A 20 minute drive off the Highway, with gorgeous swimming holes and a beautiful waterfall. (No swimming at the waterfall only downstream). If I had more time and was staying in the area, I could spend hours here. Waterholes are right next to the lower car park and the boardwalk which is partly accessible by wheelchair is next to the top car park.
Public toilets and camping available. The loos were a total mess though, a shame, as it seems to be a popular camping spot.

I went mid winter so and there was no March flies, no mosquitos not even flies.
It would make for ever better pics in wet season.

No access to the actual falls This is a delightful waterfall. When I was there the water was flowing strongly.

The road in is in poor condition but doable in a conventional car. Be careful as you pass through the aboriginal community. Several of their dogs chase cars.

When you arrive head to the camping area. This way you will avoid a steep stair case to access the falls.

Unfortunately there is no access to the creek but you still get decent views from the boardwalk.

Great walk Walk departs from south end of South Mission Beach, initially on boardwalks, then skirting the rocky shoreline and crossing the sandy beach at Lugger Bay and rocky beach at Turtle Bay . Track culminates at Kennedy Bay, where there is an information panel explaining the historical significance of the bay. Track is well marked and easy to follow. Allow 3 hours to take in the sights. Track is well defined and can be walked in runners.

Fantastic walk with amazing views. Really enjoyable walk along the Kennedy track, plenty of variety, from boardwalk, to rainforest bush track, to beaches - both Sandy and pebble and then mangrove.
There are quite a few steps, some parts are uneven and you should wear proper walking shoes/trainers for this. You definitely need mosquito repellent! As well as sunscreen and a hat- and water too.
We went all the way to Kennedy bay- which was a bit underwhelming at the end as it was low down amongst the mangroves so didn’t have the great views out to the islands like most of the track does.
Saw turtles, eagles, wallabies and so lucky to also see a cassowary on the track ahead.
Took us around 3 hours to do the return walk. I’d say to go early if you can- and definitely check the tide times for the accessibility of crossing the beach at Luggers bay, as at high tide it is often cut off.

Super Versatile and Great for all! From family to seasoned hikers this track is pretty easy but shows so much versatility with its landscape, I always see amazing animals on this walk and it is one of my faves for sure

One of the best walks at Mission Beach This is one of my favourite walks around Mission Beach. 8 k return coastal walk with board walks and concrete pathways, family friendly, dog friendly and we always see turtles around Morgan’s Lookout and Turtle Bay. You walk through many different environments. Wear long sleeves and take water - there are uncovered sections and it can get hot.

Gobsmacked About halfway between Tully and Cardwell, we saw a sign to Murray Falls. We had seen plenty of waterfalls already and the area seemed rather dry, so we debated whether to bother. But it was only 20 km from the main road, and we had plenty of time so we went. We were gobsmacked! Really beautiful with loads of water crashing down into lovely rock pools. I suppose we were doubly impressed because we had low expectations. Even so, if you are ever in this area, do not miss it.

Camping Weekend A group of 5 of us camped for the weekend at Murray Falls campground. The falls are adjacent to the campground (we camped close so we could hear the falls as we went to sleep at night - amazing!) and a short stroll via boardwalk gets you right to the base. There is a 1.8km walk which leaves from the campground which takes you to the top of the falls and offers a fantastic view out over Girramay National Park and the mountains which we enjoyed. There is wildlife aplenty - I saw an echidna & snake on the road heading in and kangaroos heading out. Also watch for cattle on the road heading in as there are un-fenced cattle farms in the area (I met 2 who wanted to walk beside me in the road!). There are lots of butterflies (Ulysses et al), & scrub turkeys and we also had a bandicoot visit our campsite at night time. The facilities are great for a National Park & include flush toilets and a shower (cold water only), though I took a swim in the creek at the day use area which is better than a shower in my opinion. Fire pits are included at each campsite (we went in May 2021 and it was starting to get cold, so the fire saved us) and the cost is $6.75 per night. The drive in is about 18km from the Bruce Highway and phone/4G reception cuts out along the way. The highlight was walking to the falls at night time - a truly magical experience. This is up there with my favourite campsites - you feel close to nature and the camping area is huge, with plenty of room to spread out and have your own private space. If you want something to do nearby there are plenty of options in Cardwell & Tully - we opted to drive into Cardwell for a coffee & then a swim at the Cardwell Spa Pool.

Family Boardwalk Great views across to Dunk Island on family friendly track along shore through rainforest. Congratulations to volunteers who built it.

Wet season treat We visited today as a day trip from Cairns. Easy drive off the highway with the last section being a gravel road (2wd was fine). We have had plenty of rain the past few weeks and could see where the water had gone across the road, so if taking a 2wd be careful! Bottom car park is beside the creek and plenty of spots for swimming as water was high and flowing. Walked up to the top carpark and camp ground which had toilet facilities. Easy walk along a boardwalk to base of falls. Water was gushing and was a sight to see. Swim in the waterhole was lovely and refreshing.
